For starters, you might consider joining one of the studies conducted around the nation for new drugs and treatments. Lawitz says this may be not only an affordable way to get treatment, but you’ll be treated by some of the most knowledgeable people about hepatitis C in the country. He personally heads up 88 centers in 30 states, which amounts to about 1,700 patients nationally. "The best way to find out about studies," he says, "is to call the university or academic center in your area. They’re usually aware of the available programs." Talking to those in support groups is another way to get information. If you can’t find a group in your area, log onto www.hepc-connection.org or www.hepfi.org for lists of support groups. The Internet is another valuable resource for finding studies. Look at the American Liver Foundation’s Web site, www.liverfoundation.org, and click on their "Clinical Trials" link for information about how to find a study in your area. And of course, the drug manufacturers are probably the best source for finding clinical trials because they sponsor them. Call the customer service department at each one to find out more. But if you’d rather not participate in a study, there are some programs to help with the cost of the drugs. For instance, Schering-Plough has its Commitment To Care Program for those people without insurance. The program is based on individual needs and income levels and will offer assistance to those without insurance, those whose insurance companies have denied payment, or even those whose deductibles are higher than they can afford. Doctors can recommend patients, or HCV patients can call them directly at (800) 521-7157 for more information. Intermune, the manufacturer of Infergen, has formed an alliance with CoVance to create the Infergen Patient Assistant Program for uninsured patients. For more information about this program, call (800) 577-9112. And finally, Hoffmann-La Roche offers an Indigent Patient Care Program that works much the same as Schering-Plough’s. Because each case is evaluated on an individual basis, it’s best to call them at (800) 526-6367 to determine whether or not they can help you with the cost of the medication.
