Cirrhosis

Janis and Friends Hepatitis C Support Web Site

What Is Cirrhosis?
Many types of chronic injury to the liver can result in scar tissue. This scarring distorts the normal structure and regrowth of liver cells. The flow of blood through the liver from the intestine is blocked and the work done by the liver, such as processing drugs or producing proteins, is hindered.

Hepatitis C Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is a serious complication of hepatitis C and is found in 20-25% of patients on initial biopsy. Patients who do not have cirrhosis on the first biopsy are at risk of later developing cirrhosis if the hepatitis C virus is causing inflammation and fibrosis (scar tissue). If the infection is cured with medication such as interferon or interferon plus ribavirin this stops the inflammation and fibrosis. It can even clear up early cirrhosis.

Dr. Richard Darling, a California dentist, founded ProrateNIH after suffering from hepatitis C, diabetes, cirrhosis and cancer of the liver, coma, heart attack, hepatorenal syndrome, myasthenia gravis and three liver transplant operations.

This site and his book, ComaLife, detail how the unfairness in the distribution of funds directly affects the sixteen diseases (The 16) that kill more people in the United States than AIDS. His chapter that addresses the shocking inequities in research spending by the NIH is titled “What The Hell Is Going On Here!?

Born and raised in Barre, Vermont, Dr. Darling, 55, was educated at Syracuse University, the University of Denver, and graduated from the University of the Pacific Dental School, San Francisco. As a member of the Board of Directors of the United Organ Transplant Association, he gives speeches promoting organ donation and clarifies the facts versus the myths regarding the “Gift of Life.” Dr. Darling strives to uplift the spirits of the patients in the Coachella Valley Hepatitis C, Liver Disease & Transplant Support Group that he founded.

ProrateNIH was formed because of the outrageous inequities in research spending by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that favor AIDS over the sixteen diseases killing more Americans than AIDS. This site will demonstrate the need to reform the public policies used to determine funding distributions by the National Institutes of Heath.
